It's a Gloriosa Day!

Yesterday did not start off well...First I had to actually go to work. Boo-Hoo. I was okay once I got there...until the "Happy Couple" came in. They did not like anything and complained about the price of trees, "We've more than doubled the price of our trees". Ok, when did you buy your trees? "Four Years ago." Really. Have you watched the news lately ? Or maybe bought...I don't know...ANYTHING in the last four years? Mrs. HC bitched about that both times they came. Yes folks, they walked out telling me the tree was too much - and then came back to spread more of their sunshine around. One of the designers saw them and ran. She said she did a design for them a few years ago and they were just awful people. Yay!

Then, to make my day even better...they turned my water off. I called to say it wasn't working and they told me I didn't pay. Of course I did! Didn't I? I pay all my utilities once they arrive. She told me she sent a notice, and a cut off notice. Ok, really, if I had seen that I would have paid. Do you think the post office girl reads my blog and got pissed? Or maybe I interrupted her show one too many times. The lady at the water company even mentioned that they might have put it in the wrong box. I think that might happen quite a bit. I get Box # 279 all the time- I'm 219. Ok, fine I have my check card and I'll gladly pay to get it back on. " Sorry, we're not set up to do that." You have got to be kidding! This means that I have to leave work in Tyler and drive my usual 45 minutes to personally pay the bill. Come on folks, give me a break. Just as I was about to leave the Water people called back and said, "We've been talking (I think maybe four people work there) and we will turn your water back on but you need to drop off the check tonight so we see it in the morning. OMG, Thank you, thank you, thank you! Small towns are the best! Do you think the water people in Dallas would have done that? Me neither.

All right, now for the best part of the day! I asked Page the other day if she and Grandpa Sute could send me some Gloriosa bulbs. My grandmother grew them for years and years and years. She was known for her flower arrangements with the gloriosa flowers. When she passed away we had the florist do her casket spray with all gloriosas. It was just breathtaking. Her yard would be just a sea of red in the summer and once we moved to Texas I started to miss them. Every time I visited Alabama it was either the wrong time of year or I was just too busy to dig any of the bulbs.
Isn't that a beautiful flower? It is the only vining bulb in the world. There are little tendrils on the tips of the leaves that grab on to anything and let me tell you the tendrils do not let go! When we first moved to Alabama I dug up a bunch of bulbs trying to clean out a bed and I didn't want to just throw the bulbs away...so I put up a little sign in my driveway to sell them. I sold $100 the first day. That's when I decided I could sell plants for a living. And so began my Plantfreak life.

Work In Progress

This is a mural that is being painted on the building that used to be my great-grandfather's general store. The farmer (beginning stages) is actually Papa Moore. The artist is reproducing it from this picture.

Ruby Ruth

I posted pictures a few days ago of Ruby Ruth, my grandmother's sister who died as a young girl. Grampa Sute sent me pictures of Ruby Ruth's headstone as well as Jimmie Ray, her brother who also died very young. Nonie told me about both but I guess I merged the two in my mind not realizing that Mama Moore (my great grandmother) lost not one but two children. I know the infant mortality rate was pretty high back then but how sad is that to lose two children!
It says that Ruby was born in 1893 or 1898~can't tell. She died in 1901...thirteen years before my grandmother was even born!

The baby in Papa Moore's lap is Jimmie Ray. I think he died really young, because I don't have any pictures of him other than as an infant. The young girl is Ida Lou who was born 12 years before my grandmother.

Dad said that they put the lambs on the headstone to identify children that had died. I didn't know that. Dad took these pictures when he was in Rutledge, AL which is where my grandmother was born. The Moore family didn't move to Foley, AL until 1929, right after the first Great Depression. I say first because it looks like we are heading for (already in?)another depression.

Have an interesting day!

Nifty, Nifty!

Mr. Plantfreak is fifty! What an old fart! Of course I have to post pictures of his glory days!
Believe it or not he still has that exact same smile/smirk!
Howdy Pardner!
Uh-oh! The hair is getting longer!
Oh Crap! It's hippy dippy time!
Here we are on our wedding day with Mr. Plantfreak's youngest, Jamie.
This photo was for a big family portrait at the beach. Of course he would not smile! Not once.
We went out to eat Saturday night for the birthday boy and tonight I'm baking him a cake~can't decide between pineapple upside down (his Favorite), or Devil's Food with maybe a chocolate ganache filling (his other favorite)...could do both...probably won't though.

Happy Birthday! I love you even though you are older than dirt!

Devil Dog's New Low (Or Should I Say High)

Ok, let me set up this story...I woke up yesterday and the greenhouse was damaged from the storm, or so I thought. Some of the ribs had broken and the plastic was sagging. The plastic was ripped (just a little) all over. It wasn't heartbreaking just a nuisance....

I just got back from mailing orders (Yay!) and as I rounded the curve on my driveway I saw a black spot on top of the greenhouse....and then it became clear to me it was Devil Dog!!!!!! I would recognize those ears anywhere! What the hell! Sitting on top of the freakin' greenhouse. I can't even be mad because I'm still stunned. There she was, just sitting on top of the GREENHOUSE!!! No wonder it broke...she's absolutely going to be the death of me. If Mr. Plantfreak doesn't kill her first.

Cattle Wranglin' in Texas

Okay, it's official! I'm a Texan cuz I've been cattle wranglin'! Okay so maybe it was just a calf, but I still got him back into my neighbors corral. Although I almost let the horse out. Did you know that cows like sedum? Oh yeah. He didn't get much though because Jade, Angel, and Spike told him to get off their land.

It only took about an hour. I even nailed up the boards where he busted out. Maybe I'll check out some ranches around here and see if they need any help. Yep, ranch hand, that's me.

Family Photo Day

While I was cleaning up the other day...I'm so proud of myself for organizing my crafties and now none of it is piled in various spots around the house! I come from a family of neat freaks and I'm the world's worst housekeeper. It's not that I like messy and don't try...I'm just not an organized person. I'm working on that. Back to the main theme of the post!...I found a stash of old family photos and I'm going to share two of them with you now.

This is Ruby Ruth Moore. She was my grandmother's sister and if I remember correctly Ruby died while quite young (correct me if I'm wrong Grandpa Sute). Just look at that beautiful face. I love my smelly boys but I always dreamed of having a little girl. Wasn't she a doll!

You can tell she was adored by her parents. I haven't seen any vintage pics of children that are quite as beautiful as this. Of course, I could be biased. I wish this picture was clearer, you can just barely see her dolls and bunny rabbit. Just adorable! I'll post other family photos at another time...I even have photos of my great, great, grandparents!

The movie and slideshow turned out pretty good...but I'll be damned if I can't figure out how to download it onto my computer. Sounds easy but...not working. Sorry Tink! Eventually I will get it on here.
I have an old Whitman's candy box chock full of valentines that my grandmother saved from childhood. They are so insanely adorable! Here are a few:

If you make something wonderful~Let me see! I love to see how people can take one theme and create totally different and fabulous works of art!

Dad and Youtube

Ok, Dad has been playing on Youtube again. It's so funny to me! This is a guy who had an 8 track player until the late 80's. Now he's all about the computer! And addicted to Youtube like his grandson AJ.

First up is Il Divo which coincidentally was Mom's favorite... she would have loved this version of "Amazing Grace" http://http//www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtrnB4FZ-yc

Next is the Louvin Brothers...don't ask because I do not have a flippin' clue. Make Grandpa Sute happy and take a look! http://http//www.youtube.com/watch?v=PiAqGliq_pE&feature=related

Now, I have to tell you about the diabolical doings of Devil Dog! For those of you who do not know, Devil Dog is my puppy Angel who I was suckered into taking at First Monday. She's something else too! Here is the latest; I came home the other day to find the lower half of a squirrel carcass laying on the ground. Ewww! The last few days Angel would try to bring it in and I would shoo her out.

Yesterday, Mr. Plantfreak apparently did not notice DD when he left for work at the ungodly hour of 4:45 am. I got up and turned on the lights, looked down, and there was the squirrel butt on the floor sitting perfectly upright sans head, arms, and upper torso turned towards me! For a split second, I thought the boys were playing tricks on me...but they would never get up that early. I felt like I was in one of their stupid TV shows where the inanimate object stalks you. Mr. Squirrelbutt is now happily residing with Mr. GarbageMan...somewhere.

Hey Candy! First Monday is a gigantic flea market in Canton, Tx. It's once a month at the beginning of the month. Awesome finds! I found some old books but I wanted them to be in crappy condition so I could bear to tear out the pages. Found some old viewfinder pics, and random other little bits. It was really too early in the year. There was however some amazing furniture pieces but I was on a budget and searching for small game this time.

Going To First Monday (I'm Singing This)

I'm going to 1st Monday~ La-La-La. My friend Phyllis and I were going to go but she had to back out. Dang it! So I put my best puppy dog eyes on and asked my husband if he wanted to go. I'm so pitiful. Of course he gave in...he likes to go too. That is, unless I'm going with another woman and we become a giggle fest...then he would rather stay home.

I'm not spending much, but I'm on the hunt for cards, old books, buttons, and old (costume) jewelry. Stuff for my crafties! I'll let you know what I find!
