How I Spent My Day Off

This past Friday when Dad and Page came in to town they brought a "little"present. I mentioned to Page that I was running out of room for all of my grandmother's stuff (90% of it is fragile, antique, extremely delicate, etc.) So she found a china cabinet for me. What a great surprise! BTW, The painting on the wall is my grandmother's house .

Once I started unpacking, I found things that I don't even remember boxing up when my grandmother passed away. Like this little sampler:Nonie had it hanging in her house but trust me, there was no dirt. Finding this led to more treasures that needed hanging. I realized I now had a collection of pitchers so I put a few on the dresser. I think there is still more in the boxes~the many, many, boxes.I found a ton of old linens, maybe I should put one or two under the pitchers? I'll take pictures of the linens (when I get them ironed so be prepared to wait)
I also found her little butter presses and some milk bottles. Saturday on the way to work I stumbled across this little shelf and voila!... Hillbilly decor! I like it though and the shelf is hanging in my dining room.

It was so hard to figure out exactly what I wanted to put in my new cabinet. Nonie had handpainted china, a complete set of antique china, tons of antique tea sets, and so much glass I was afraid a bull was going to charge through any minute. So I put what I found first that sort of matched. One good thing though, I can change the contents with my mood. Considering the hot flashes and chin hairs that have arrived, that might be every week.

Devil Dog Strikes Again

Devil dog. What can I say. I guess I better give you the back story to this little adventure. A while back Cody cracked the window in our living room (I won't tell you how long ago that was, just too embarassing). Well, a few days ago the kittens pulled some of the tape loose and knocked out a small piece of broken glass. Apparently, Devil Dog is a monkey see~monkey do. She busted the entire pane of glass out and was jumping through the window. There is not one single cut on her. Devil Dog.

Blowin' In

My dad is blowing into town on his way to a Fort Worth car show today. He and Page are staying in the Munzesheimer Manor Bed and Breakfast.

We're going to go to dinner at Kitchen's. It's a hardware store/restaraunt. Snicker. But really, the food is pretty good.
Dad will love the hardware area. Pictures tomorrow!

Treasure Hunt Booty

I went to the estate sale... I didn't expect this little teapot to still be there...
I eyeballed this tray when I went for Thursday...
This little chopper in the kitchen caught my eye as well...
These little cutouts were hidden somewhere...And this was only a few in the basket that I bought...
I'm totally loving these animals...
Antique Frogs...LOVE IT!!!...

Don't know what these were for, but they came in a glass jar that I bought...
Found this little clothes hanger. Very cool...
I also bought some wooden baskets and some wooden masher thing from the kitchen. Could have bought more, but the money tree hasn't produced any good crops lately. Still, I made out like a bandit!!! I might list some of these in Etsy...but then again, I might not.

Treasured Piece

As we all know, I'm a total pack rat and as I get older I get worse. I made fun of some of the things my grandmother saved over the years (i.e. plastic strawberry baskets) and now it's startin g to make sense to my strange little mind. I'm also a compulsive collector. There is an estate sale today and they misprinted the time...I was there at 8am and it's not until 1pm. It's killing me to wait.

Back on point. One of my most treasured possessions is this dresser. The original Grandpa Sute (who came over from Austria) was a master carpenter and made it.

The detailing is just beautiful!!! I love everything about it. Especially that a family member made it himself.

The pictures might be fuzzy but I'm too lazy to go back and take more. So suck it up and deal. I'll check back in after the estate sale and post my treasures.

Dishes For The Sick And Convalescent

My friend Kjirsten is sick~while we are broiling in the sun right now she is in the middle of winter and feeling pretty low. I was flipping through the old cookbooks and found a section for sick people in the 1928 edition of a Sunkist sponsered book. It starts off by giving you an education on the health properties of citrus fruit. I'll spare you of that. Here are the recipes:

Lemon Whey

1 cup milk
1 Tbsp "Sunkist" lemon juice

Heat milk in a double boiler and add lemon juice. Cook without stirring until the whey separates. Strain through a double thickness of cheese cloth. Add sugar to taste and serve at once or chill and serve. DISGUSTING! Ewww

ORANGE OMELET

1 egg
grated orange rind
1 Tbsp orange juice
salt
1 orange
2 tsp butter
2 tsp powdered sugar

Beat egg, orange rind, juice, and salt. Peel orange and slice thinly. Sprinkle with 1 tsp of sugar. Melt butter in a frying pan, pour in egg slowly. Cook over low heat until all mixture is cooked and flip onto plate. Sprinkle with remaining sugar and surround with orange slices. MUCH BETTER.

HOT LEMONADE

3 Tbsp "Sunkist" Lemon juice
3/4 cup boiling water
1 Tbsp sugar

Add sugar to boiling water and stir until dissolved. Add lemon juice and serve.

REALLY. That's it? Kjirsten, add some vodka or whisky and I gaurantee this recipe will make you feel better. Get Well soon!!!

Wonderful Surprise

Ok, so I'm supposed to be cleaning house. And I was...until I found this box that was packed up with some craft stuff. It was my grandmother's and it's marked "Mama's Recipes". Inside was this treasure trove of cookbooks. I absolutely love cookbooks. Some of these date back to the early 30's. My grandmother once told me that when Papa Moore had his general store, one of the first in Foley, AL, that the sales reps for companies were always giving them little freebies. I imagine that's where Mama Moore got all these. There is Arm and Hammer, Folger's, Sunkist, and even Jello. I know where my "packrat" gene came from.

Maters

I planted heirloom tomatoes this year and these are my Cherokee Purples. I CANNOT wait for these little darlings to ripen. My blackberries are ripening...I think...except for the fact that Devil Dog and Jade eat them before I can get out there. Caught 'em the other day. Damn dogs. Whose idea was it to have dogs anyway?!? Oh yeah.

Frogs and Dogs

Let me done tole' you 'bout my day yesterday. My friend Karen came by to see all my babies~two'legged, four-legged, and root-bound. She got the tour of everything but the house because it's just gross.

While we are looking around, Devil Dog (you know which one) is having a ball over at the edge of the woods. She's flipping and rolling and just living it up. Then it dawns on me...that's where Mark dug up the septic tank line~which needs to be replaced. OMG. As she starts loping towards us I see this nasty, dank, black stuff coating her and the blood just drained out of my face. It was all we could do to keep her away from Karen. We herded Devil Dog to the lake and she happily splashed herself clean. GAG.
We quickly left and went to lunch at La Waffalata in Mineola. They have the best food and dessert. They also have a flavored tea everyday and this time it was Jasmine Tea. Yum!

On a lighter note, we have a little baby shower for Mica at work today. She is about to pop! I found the perfect little baby gift (on Etsy of course).

It's a baby set with a burping cloth, onesie, bib, and taggie. I guess the taggie is like a woobie, or a boo. Not a clue. I absolutely love the froggies! The stitching on this stuff is impeccable. I got it from http://www.designsbynana.com/ . She also has what she calls a feeding book...it is a little kit containing all you need for feeding time. Brilliant idea!
I also picked up some handmade soaps for a little birthday present for my friend Barbara. The peppermint smells awesome! I bought it from http://www.lilybaysoap.etsy.com/ . I love Etsy. Lily Bay also had soap to go. It looks like a deoderant stick but it's soap. Why can't I have these kind of ideas?

Garden Shots

I've got quite a few things blooming right now.
This daylily is called 'Eli'. The lemon yellow is just amazing.

This daylily is called 'Sweet Summer Heat' Do you see the grasshopper in the bloom? Too cute.

Random Garden ShotThis little angel was at work with a broken wing and was in mortal danger of being thrown out. I happened to rescue her and one morning I found her nestled right here. Every day when I leave for work I find my eyes resting on her and it gives me just a little lift for the day.

Being Silly Is Hard Work

Okay, at the paying job fairies are a big deal. In fact, fairy gardens are becoming a big deal everywhere. Just google 'fairy garden' and see what you get. I haven't come across any half-naked guys frolicking in the tulips so you should be safe.

I was at First Monday~it's a monster flea market~ and walked by some cypress knees a guy was selling. They screamed FAIRY HOUSE at me. So I bought. I finally finished one house. Put your silly hat on and give me your harshest critique.

Ignore the mess on my table.

Any ideas or suggestions on how to improve the next one? I bought several and Mark says I have to make the houses before we get anymore.

New Bloomers!

This daylily is called 'Clothed In Glory'. I love the ruffle around the edge! Pretty spectacular, huh? Well, okay, it's spectacular if your are a plant nerd. Guilty as charged.
